Mount Auburn is a village in Christian County, Illinois, United States. The population was 480 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Mount Auburn is located at (39.765906, -89.261069).[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 515 people, 223 households, and 156 families residing in the village. The population density was 519.7 people per square mile (200.9/km²). There were 228 housing units at an average density of 230.1 per square mile (88.9/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.06% White, 0.58% Native American, and 1.36% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.39% of the population.

There were 223 households out of which 25.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% were married couples living together, 8.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% were non-families. 26.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.77.

In the village the population was spread out with 20.2% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 85.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $45,417, and the median income for a family was $47,604. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $21,389 for females. The per capita income for the village was $18,829. About 1.9% of families and 2.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.6% of those under age 18 and 3.3% of those age 65 or over.

Church

Mount Auburn is the home of the Methodist Church on Elm Street, and the Mt. Auburn Church of Christ in the dead center of town. The Mt. Auburn Church of Christ is home of the Main Event youth group that is traveled to Louisiana for missions work in June, 2007. The trip was very successful. Its youth group currently holds around 30 members, which is large for a church with a population of 50. Its yearly trips include Christ In Youth and various camping trips. Its leaders are Tisha Armstrong, Music Director, and her husband, Dan Armstrong, Associate Minister.

History

Mount Auburn was founded on July 11, 1839. It was seriously considered as possibility for the state capital at the time the center of government was moved from Vandalia to Springfield.

Picnic

An annual event in the is the Mount Auburn Picnic. Started in 1887 in Morganville by 13 men including Hi Montgomery and T. A. Montgomery, the picnic was moved to Mt Auburn in 1919. Currently the event is held in the Mount Auburn city park.
